Smithgall named USCAA All-American

Central Maine Community College forward Tyler Smithgall was named United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-American at the national tournament in Pennsylvania this week.

Smithgall, now in his second year at CMCC, averaged 17 points and seven rebounds through 24 games this season.

The Mustangs co-captain was also named to the Yankee All-Conference during the Final Four in Concord, NH.

"He's the hardest worker on our team and leads by example on the court," said CMCC Athletic Director and men's basketball coach Dave Gonyea. "Every program should have a Tyler Smithgall; I don't look forward to the day he leaves."

Smithgall played his high school ball at Winthrop where he led the Ramblers to a 15-3 record and an appearance in the state championship game in 2006.

With a strong desire to continue his basketball career, Smithgall came to CMCC with encouragement from best friend and fellow player, Nate Damm.

As a freshman, he was an integral part of the Mustangs' run in the Yankee Small College Conference Final Four last season where the team fell short of a conference title by two points to Southern Maine Community College.

This season the Mustangs never fell below the top three in the USCAA coaches' poll, securing an at-large bid to the national tournament.

Through two games, Smithgall has registered a pair of double-doubles in a 89-72 win over No. 10 Penn State Fayette and an 85-76 loss to No. 2 Penn State Beaver.

Ryan Little ignited Andrews with three 3-pointers midway through the second half that gave the Cardinals the lead for the balance of the game.

Farrell Jean-Gilles led the Mustang attack with 20 points, including two treys. Cam Angell buried four from behind the arc for 12. Tyler Smithgall and Matt Sceviour added 10 points apiece.
