2008-09 YSCC Tournament Recap

Moose too much for Mustangs

CONCORD, NH - Lawrence Williams' 22 points led four players in double figures as sixth-seeded UMaine-Augusta edged second-ranked Central Maine Community College 77-72 in a Yankee Conference semifinal matchup on Saturday.

The Mustangs were held scoreless for the opening three minutes and were forced to chase the scoreboard for the balance of the game.

Tyler Smithgall drained a game-high 28 points and hauled down 12 rebounds for the
Mustangs (18-6) while Farrell Jean-Gilles poured in 16 points and Matt Sceviour added 11 points and six assists.

A Jean-Gilles 3-pointer tied the game with just over a minute remaining, but a stout
Moose defense forced the Mustangs into poor shot selection in the closing seconds.

Moses Brathwaite dominated the paint for the Moose (10-19) with 20 points and 21 boards. Deon Cheers registered 13 points and Herbert Davis added 10.

Following the game, Mustang forwards Smithgall and Cam Angell were named to the Yankee All-Conference team.

Smithgall, Angell and Holmquist earn Yankee All-Conference honors

Tyler Smithgall, Cam Angell and Michelle Holmquist have earned spots on the Yankee Small College Conference All-Conference team for the 2008-09 season.

Smithgall is averaging 17 points and seven rebounds per game and has served as the backbone of the men's squad since the season began. He has established himself as a threat not only in the low post, but on the perimeter as well. He works just as hard on the defensive end and has proved himself in pressure situations, most notably a 31-point, nine rebound performance against Southern Maine on Jan. 21.

Whether he's throwing down a thunderous dunk or torching the nets from 3-point range, Cam Angell has established himself as one of the top scoring threats in the Conference. Averaging 16 points and nine boards this season, Cam is the kind of player who can turn a five point deficit into a one point lead in a matter of seconds. His eight 3-pointers and game-high 28 points against Massasoit CC on Jan. 31 serve as one example of how Cam can dominate a game.

With leading scorer Tiffany Seams out with an injury early in the season, the Mustangs turned to Michelle Holmquist to carry the offense. The freshman forward answered by averaging 17 points per game and registering 12 double-doubles on the season. She led the Lady Mustangs to a 9-0 run to start the 2008-09 campaign and has been nearly unstoppable in the paint. With the emergence of some strong outside shooters, Holmquist and the Lady Mustangs have one of the more balanced attacks in the YSCC and hope for an extended playoff run.
