Fall 2009
Central Maine Community College had an extraordinary 2009 soccer season. The Mustangs finished the regular season with a winning record, 6 wins and 3 losses. The team also qualified for the Conference playoffs for the second time under third year head coach Bryan Wallace.
In late July the team came together for the first time. A practice was designed to introduce the new players to returning players, the coach and CMCC. Preseason prepared the Mustangs for what proved to be a very difficult season-opener against the defending national champions, Briarcliffe College.
After dropping the first game of the season the Mustang’s regrouped and went on a three game winning streak beating conference opponents Unity College, Eastern Maine Community College and Northern Maine Community College.
Coach Wallace was pleased saying, “CMCC had an exciting 2009 soccer season. This team had a lot of talent but above all else I was impressed with this team’s character. They fought through a lot of adversity. We played some thrilling soccer matches this season and this group was a pleasure to coach. With a 6-3 record this year and several key players returning next year I’m already looking forward to 2010. I wish all the best for my players graduating in May.”
Congratulations to Yussuf Shinio and Shane Hurdle. These players were named to the 2009 YSCC All-Conference Team.
Shane Hurdle was also recognized as a 2009 USCAA All-American.

NHTI 1, CMCC 0
Central Maine Community College suffered their second in conference loss at home against undefeated New Hampshire Technical Institute. The game was scoreless until midway through the second half when a NHTI attacker broke in on Mustang goalkeeper Jon Ross Caron and scored the only goal of the match. NHTI applied a lot of pressure throughout the match but the Mustang defense held strong. With moments left in the game Central Maine had a great opportunity and the ball ended up in NHTI’s goal but the goal was disallowed because of a handball. Jon Ross Caron played very well compiling many important saves. Hilowle Aden played exceptionally well in the midfield for the mustangs before leaving the game with an injury. Abdikadir Ahmed worked hard providing several key passes for CMCC’s attack. The entire CM defense really stepped up. Jeff Wierzbicki, Nate Lavoie, Erik Waite and Brian Kearns held NHTI (who is undefeated and ranked number one in the Yankee Small College Conference men’s soccer standings) scoreless for 65 minutes.
Mustangs topple Seawolves in OT
October 6, 2009
CMCC – 4, SMCC 3, OT
CMCC traveled to SMCC to try and avenge their earlier loss this season. Brian Kearns provided a great through ball to Shane Hurdle to put the Mustang’s ahead 1-0. Just a few minutes later Hurdle scored again after collecting a shot from Ahmed Mohamed. That score held until half time, 2-0 Mustangs. SMCC came out aggressive in the second half. Twenty minutes into the second half SMCC got on the scoreboard, and in the next 5 minutes SM would add two more goals and claimed the lead for the first time. It would have been easy for CM to hang their head in defeat but with eight minutes left in the game Ahmed Mohamed received a ball from Yussuf Shinio and tied the game. That score held and the Mustangs found themselves in their first overtime of the season. It didn’t last long as Erik Waite took the ball deep into the Southern Maine corner and crossed the ball to a wide open Ahmed Mohamed for the win. Jon Ross Caron had seven critical saves. The entire CM CC midfield played very well.

season Saturday night against Northern Maine Community College. The
game was under the lights in Presque Isle. The Mustangs controlled
the game until Northern Maine capitalized on their first good
