AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's volleyball team split in a weekend Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) two-match matinee at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Saturday, Sept. 25.

SMCC picked up its first conference win of the season taking down the host Mustangs of CMCC 3-1. The SeaWolves fell short in the first set 12-25, but dominated the second 25-12, and won the third and fourth by four points.

Head Coach Garrett Lewellen commented, "We started off sluggish and lost the first set to CMCC rather handily. CMCC served the ball well and that gave us some trouble—we tend to get ourselves into deficits early and have to work our way back. Overall, the team as a whole played noticeably better than last weekend. Our hitting and setting especially were more effective and an asset rather than being a liability as they often were last weekend. This was a focus area in practice last week, so it was great to see some fruit from our labors. It paid off with us being able to take the next three sets from CMCC and win the match 3-1."

The SeaWolves faced NHTI in their second match, dropping the first and second sets 19-25 and 16-25. SMCC stormed back to take the third set 25-17, but it was to no avail falling short in the fourth 14-25.

Coach Lewellen went on to say, "Similar slow start against NHTI. They were more of a challenge for us at the net. The girls put it together in the third set to come back to a 2-1 deficit, but could not come through in the fourth."

Next for the Lady SeaWolves is a trip to Great Bay Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in Portsmouth, N.H.
