SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split with the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 25.

Game 1: W, 7-1

First-year Sarah Wilkins (Alberta, Canada) tripled on a line drive to right field in the first inning, allowing Delanie Perry (DeLand, Fl.) to score. CMCC managed a run in the third inning when Allee Wellman hit a sacrifice fly bringing Olivia Gallan home.

SMCC took over in the fifth inning pushing five runs across. First-year Veronica Mercier (Bangor, Maine) grounded out, allowing Abigail Ontengco (Brownfield, Maine) to score. Perry then singled on a hard ground ball to left field, bringing Olivia Hill (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) home. Rookie Emily Hutchins (Kennebunk, Maine) followed with a single, scoring Perry and first-year Shylah Woodford (Readfield, Maine) hit a fly ball allowing Wilkins and Hutchins to score.

Hill completed a 4-4 day with a RBI in the sixth inning.

SMCC's Wilkins tossed another complete game, striking out 12 batters to surpass the 100 season total mark. CMCC's Brooke Gero took the loss giving up 10 hits.

Game 2: L, 3-2

In the top of the second, CMCC's McKenna Ridlon scored on a SMCC fielding error. Later in the inning, Miah Gallan hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another run, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the fifth inning when CMCC's Sam Withee singled to left field tacking on another run to make it 3-0. The Seawolves looked poised for a comeback when Hill scored on a passed ball and Hutchins delivered a RBI double. They couldn't manage magic in the seventh and fell shy 3-2.

CMCC's Olivia Scott grabbed the win; first-year Jaida Case (Machias, Maine) suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run.

The split moves SMCC to 15-9 on the year, 5-1 in conference play.

The Seawolves continue their home stand when they face off against the Knights from the Community College of Rhode Island on Friday, Apr. 26. First pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
