Mustangs Stumble at Home to VTC

Auburn, ME – Vermont Technical College came into CM playing their second game in two days.  CM played their third game in three days, except this one was at home.  Consider the above and ask yourself what kind of game this would be?  Two tired teams going through the motions wanting and needing a day off.  No, how about a double overtime thriller with the Knights coming out on top in a 93-91 heartbreak for the home team.

CM jumped up early taking a fourteen-point lead and running to the locker room with a 44-33 lead at the half.   VTC chipped away the second half reducing the lead to single digits heading to the finish line.  CM used a multiple of players trying to keep fresh legs on the court attempting to put the stubborn Knights away.  The Knights simply would not quit!

As time ran down in regulation, VTC hit a shot at the buzzer to put the game into overtime. The second overtime was much the same; back and forth with VTC again getting the last shot but this time came up short.

In the third overtime, CM jumped out to a five-point lead but could not hold on.  The Knights scored on a misplay by CM with 3.2 ticks on the clock to leave Auburn with a 93-91 win.

Josh Chery had a monster game for CM hitting for 28 points and registering 16 rebounds.  Elijah Barbour chipped in with 17 points and Corey David added 12 points and 5 assists.  Malik Farley came off the bench to rip down 8 rebounds and scored 11 points.

According to Head Coach Dave Gonyea, "we threw everything we had at them and they kept coming back.  I was so impressed with their composure and effort.  VTC is a well-coached team and one who doesn't give up.  In terms of our guys, they worked hard, made plays but by the end three games in three days took its toll on us."

"I was also pleased we had four college coaches in the house and their impression was positive regarding some of our players and their commitment", Gonyea says.
