Softball Splits with SMCC

The CM Lady Mustangs traveled to Southern Maine Community College to face off against the Lady Seawolves in a Yankee Small Conference double header Thursday.

During game one the two teams battled back and forth for the lead.  Heading in to the third inning with the game tied at 1 apiece, first baseman, Laura Soohey stepped up to the plate and ripped a two run homer off the first pitch. SM answered with two of their own runs tying the game once again. Samantha Bruce had a nice poke to left field that brought Stephanie Mullins across the plate in the fourth inning but SM went ahead on their own 3 run homerun by Anna Allard. CM started to rally in the sixth inning, bringing home 3 runs to tie the game for the 3rd time.  Heading in to the 7th inning the CM bats came alive with all Lady Mustangs hitting.  Laura Soohey and Hannah Champagne each had 2 RBI as the Mustangs scored 8 runs in the top of the 7th to pull ahead.  The Seawolves comeback bid fell short as they were not able to cross the plate a final time.  Final score 16-8 Lady Mustangs.

Erica Brochu pitched a complete game striking out 4 and only giving up 1 walk.  She had 2 doubles, 2 runs and drove in 2 RBIs.  Courtney Taylor, Sam Bruce, Hannah Champagne and Maggie McConkey each chalked up RBI's with Kaisha Rodriguez (3 RBIs) and Laura Soohey (4 RBIs) leading the way.

Game two started as both teams battled again and stayed close.  The Lady Mustangs jumped to 2-0 lead to start off the game but the Seawolves answered to move ahead by 2 in the second inning. In the third Laura Soohey roped another one out of the park for her 2nd home run of the day.  Taylor Pare and Steph Mullins each had RBIs in the top of the fifth to tie the game but with darkness and temperatures falling it was not enough to rally past the Seawolves.  The Seawolves scored 3 in their last at bat as the game was called due to darkness with the Mustangs dropping game two with a score of 8-5 to the Seawolves.

Hannah Champagne replaced an injured Erica Brochu on the mound in the first.  Champagne gave up 2 walks and struck out 2.  Maggie McConkey had 2 RBIs, while Steph Mullins, Taylor Pare and Laura Soohey each had 1.
