Softball struggles on the road

The Central Maine Community College softball team took to the road for a 3-day 6-game weekend road trip. First, the Mustangs stopped in Concord, NH to face the reigning Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Champion NHTI Lynx in four game series on Friday April 5 and Saturday, April 6 before traveling south to Warrick, RI to face Monroe College and CCRI for two more games on Sunday, April 7.

Game 1: NHTI L, 10-2 (5 innings)

First-year Megan Theriault (Lewiston, ME) started in the circle for her first start of the year to go 5 innings and suffer the loss. The Mustangs struggled with errors allowing the Lynx ample opportunities to stay at the plate. Offensively Alex Bessy (Jay, ME) had a triple and Ali Sult (Lisbon, ME) added a double for the Mustangs

Game 2: NHTI L, 20-0 (5 innings)

Theriault again got the start in game 2 but was replaced by Sophomore Cagney O' Brien (Newcastle, ME) The Mustangs struggled from the get go and never recovered. A bright note for the Mustangs offensively was Sierra Wallace (Phippsburg, ME) and Tabie Tlumac (Readfield, ME) each recording a double.

Game 3: NHTI L, 13-3

Theriault took back to the circle for the game 3 matchup and displayed a solid performance. The Mustangs being tied going into the 5th inning fell apart with a 4-error inning which opened the game up for the Lynx. Theriault, Tlumac and Marah Hall (Madison, ME) each added singles for the Mustangs who were smart at the plate recording 5 walks and putting runners on base.

Game 4: NHTI L, 23-0 (5 innings)

O' Brien started the 4th and final game of the series. The Mustangs ran out of steam in this matchup struggling in all areas and never seeming to get things going with Wallace getting 2 singles and Hall getting 1.

Game 5: Monroe L, 12-10

Megan Theriault got the start in game 5 of the 6-game road trip. This was clearly Theriault's best performance of the weekend. Theriault paced the Mustangs while recording 8 k's and the Mustangs offense scored 10 runs. Sult, Bessey and Theriault each recorded multiple hits to pace the Mustangs offensively who broke out for their best offensive performance of the weekend

 Game 6: CCRI L 16-3 (5 innings)

After a stellar game 1 Coach Bruce Roberson again Theriault to wrap up the weekend for the final game of the weekend. Theriault went 2 innings before Robertson turned the ball over to O' Brien. The Mustangs exhausted from a 6 game in 3-day weekend ran out of gas as CCRI kept the pressure on and outpaced the Mustangs to end the weekend. Theriault recorded a double and a single while Stephanie Jones (Westport Island, ME) jacked a double as well.

Coach Robertson commented. "This was our first time outside all season and we drew the short straw and a tough weekend matchup with the reigning Yankee Small College Conference Champions and finishing up at CCRI. We started out a slow but I liked what I saw by the end of the weekend. Our pitching started coming around while our bats were right on Sunday. We had steady improvement and that is what we looking for from our players. We just need to limit our errors. We cannot give teams extra outs and expect to win. If we limit the errors, the wins will come."

The Mustangs are next scheduled to face Rivals SMCC and UNE Club team to wrap up the week.
