Softball wins on the road

Warwick, RI - The CM Softball Team hit the road to face the Knights of CCRI in double header action Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: CCRI W, 8-5

The Mustangs started game one with sophomore, Megan Theriault (Lewiston, ME) in the circle. Theriault allowed 5 hits, 3 earned-runs, 1 walks and adding 2 strike outs in one inning of work. Unfortunately, Theriault's shoulder/back started stiffening up in the first inning so the Mustangs turned to first-year Molly Flaherty (Sabattus, ME). Flaherty took the ball, stepped up, and rose to the challenge. Flaherty, who kept the Knights off balance with an aray of pitches, pitched the remainder of the game allowing only 5 hits, 1 run, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts in 6 innings of work.

The Mustangs committed 2 errors in the field.

The Mustangs offense had 12 hits in game 1. They were paced by Theriault who had a double and a single. Abby Russell (Auburn, ME) and Macey Phillips (Wilton, ME) both added a double. While Kiera-Caley Young (Sabattus, ME), Flaherty, and Haley Fernald (Bridgton, ME), Abby Ferland (Monmouth, ME), Sydney Crocker (S. Paris, ME), Maddy Boynton (China, ME), Maria Dostie (Lewiston, ME) all added singles. Russell lead the Mustangs with 2 RBI's.

Game 2: CCRI W, 6-6 (tie)

In game 2, the Mustangs turned to first-year Crocker who was making her first colligate start. Crocker pitched the first 4 inning allowing 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 strikeouts, while walking 0 and hitting 1. In relief the Mustangs turned back to Game 1 winner, Flaherty in the 5th. Flaherty pitched the final 3 innings giving up 3 hits, 0 walks, and 1 earned run.

The Mustangs committed 3 errors in the field.

Game 2 saw the Mustangs have to battle back to the Knights trailing 3-0 going into the 3rd inning. The Mustangs finally goththings going scoring 3 runs tying the game up. The Mustangs added 2 more runs in the 5th. Again, trailing 5-6 going into the 7th inning the Mustangs dug deep. Fernald got on with a single Abigail Hanson (Wells, ME) dropped a sacrifice bunt moving Fernald all the way to 3rd base. Next up Ferland hit a sacrifice pop fly to CF scoring Fernald to tie the game at 6-6. Flaherty then closed the 7th inning with a 1-2-3 inning.

Unfortunately, the Knights pitcher was injured and could not compete in extra innings resulting the game to end in a tie. The Mustangs had 8 hits in game 2 and were paced by Phillips who had the best day of her fall season adding a triple and a double while making multiple spectacular catches in Center Field. Ferland, Flaherty, Theriault, and Fernald all added singles.

Head Softball Coach, Bruce Robertson, commented, "This was a great couple rebound games for us. We did not have our best day on Saturday and it was nice to see us put that bad day behind us and step up after a long travel to a very tough CCRI team. Their lineup was solid though the order with good bats and speed. With us being down a few players with injury, and then Theriault coming out of the circle after the first inning of game one with her shoulder getting tight, it was great to see Flaherty step up and everyone give her the run support she needed. Game two we needed to play comeback and we did just that! Playing these tough out of conference games will only help us as we prepare for our spring season."

Next up the Mustangs and their final games for the fall season as they host Merrimack Club on Saturday 10/19. Game times are 11am and 1pm. This is also the date for the fall open house at CM.
