Lady Mustangs Lose a Tough One at Home to SMCC

Auburn, ME - In their final meeting of the season the Lady Mustangs hosted their rival the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves and it was a tough battle right to the end. Central Maine has been working hard in practice on increasing their numbers in the attack and it paid off today when their midfield and forwards were able to control more of the game and give the tough Mustang defense a break at times.

The game started immediately with the Seawolves getting a shot on the Mustang net within the first ten seconds of the game but Central Maine settled in and began to play. The game went up and down the field with the Seawolves and Mustangs trading shots throughout the first half. The Seawolves finally got on the scoreboard with a long shot in the 25th minute of play and they would score again six minutes later on a long shot in the 31st minute. Megan Duval closed the gap for the Mustangs with a goal assisted by Ellie Jasper and Anna Quinlan when she slipped behind the Seawolves defense and broke in on goal. The half ended 2-1.

The second half began much the same way the first half ended. Both teams moving the ball up and down the field only to be turned away by strong defensive play at both ends. The Seawolves would strike first in the second half however, getting a goal on a long shot at the 17 minute mark of the half. In true Mustang fashion however, Central Maine never gave in and continued to attack, literally playing this game to the final seconds with Duval scoring the second Central Maine goal as time expired on the clock. The game ended in a 3-2 loss for the Mustangs but this game showed exactly how far this team has come this season.
