Mustangs Deny Black Sheep, 2-0

Auburn, ME -  The Lady Mustangs traveled to Hampshire College for their home opener and left Amhrerst with a 2-0 win. Playing their fourth conference game of the season and fourth road trip, CM scored two goals in the second half to overcome the home team. Working all week to rebound from their loss to SMCC, the Mustangs focused primarily on making connections between their defense, midfield, and attackers. The hard work paid off in a defensive performance that was flawless against Hampshire. Playing a three-back system, the defensive unit of sophomore Keara Hunter (Wiscasset, ME), and freshmen Marah Hall (Madison, ME) and Thea Quick (Buckfield, ME) not only held tight against the Hampshire attack, but limited the Black Sheep to 10 shots for the whole game, many of them from long range.

The scoreless first half saw multiple Mustang scoring opportunities but Hampshire goalkeeper Kat Pomeroy was able to turn back all of them. It wasn't until the opening minutes of the second half that midfielder Tabie Tlumac (Readfield, ME) sent a pass through the Hampshire defense to find Samantha Belardo (Russell, MA) who netted the first Central Maine goal. Later on in the second half it was Belardo who slipped the ball through the Hampshire defenders to Deliah Schreiber (Lisbon, ME) who put the Mustangs up 2-0, and secure the win for Central Maine.

Freshman goalkeeper Skyler Henry (Waterford, CT) notched the win with 10 saves. The Mustangs will open their home schedule Sunday September 16 against Paul Smiths College of New York in an 11 am contest.
