Women's Soccer falls in regular season finale

Auburn, ME - In their final home game of the 2018 season and the last game they will play on their grass field before new construction begins, the Lady Mustangs fell to the rival Seawolves of SMCC 3-0. Working on a new formation in preparation for post-season play, Central Maine struggled to mount a meaningful attack at the SMCC net. The Mustangs moved the ball well at times and as has been the case all year, their defense held tight under a lot of pressure, limiting their opponent to mostly long range shots with very few opportunities inside the penalty area.

At the 34-minute mark, the Seawolves got on the scoreboard when a pass through the Mustang defense led to a 50/50 ball between Central Maine goalkeeper Ali Sult (Lisbon, ME) and Southern Maine's Bernise Bartlett. Bartlett got to the ball just before the collision and was able to put it past Sult and into the Mustang net for a 1-0 Southern Maine lead, which would remain through the rest of the first half.

The second half saw Southern Maine capitalize in the 4th minute when a Mustang defender took down a Seawolves player inside the penalty area resulting in a penalty kick by Emily Harris to put SMCC up 2-0. The game evened out after that with play up and down the field by both teams until the Seawolves put their third and final goal in at the 73rd minute when Jessica Haskell dribbled past a couple of Mustang defenders to get a good look at the net and putting the shot past Sult. The Mustangs finished the game on the attack and got more shots in the second half then the first.

Mustang keeper Sult finished with 9 saves on 12 shots on goal by SMCC.
