Auburn, ME - Medomak Valley High School forward and team captain, Cassi Smeltzer, has committed to play for the Central Maine Mustangs. Smeltzer is the second commitment in the 2019 recruiting class tht will help build on the success of the 2018 squad.
According to Mustangs Head Coach, Rob Rodriguez, "I've been watching Cassi for the last few years and I knew from the first time I saw her that she would fit well in our system. She's a dynamic, high energy player with excellent speed and an attacking mentality and is physically stronger than most players her size. She is a legitimate scoring threat every time she touches the ball, whether it's setting a teammate up with a pass or taking the shot herself."
Medomak Valley High School Head Coach, Brianna Morrill added, "I have had the pleasure to have coached Cassi for two seasons, and have seen her develop her understanding of the game and emerge as a leader. She is quick, strong on the ball and has the ability to serve an accurate, driven serve which can be extremely dangerous in the final third, and it makes her an attacking threat. What I like most about Cassi is her willingness to learn and ask questions. She is coachable and willing to try new positions when asked and is constantly trying to improve her game."
Cassi mentioned that she chose Central Maine because, "It has the three things I most wanted in a college; the program of study I want, the soccer program I want and a beautiful campus. Playing college soccer will be different because of the increased challenge and I will be playing with a more experienced team but I'm looking forward to improving my soccer skills and traveling with the team to play other colleges. I believe I can bring my willingness to be a dedicated team member to the Mustangs along with my promise to remain aggressive and bring my best winning attitude to the team."
For the past four years Cassi has volunteered at a youth soccer camp and as a player buddy for the Challenger Baseball Little League program, a team dedicated to providing sports opportunities to children with physical and mental disabilities. For the previous three years she has participated as a Peer Support Student in her school's PAWS program that ensures all students have assistance from a classmate to help them through their high school career.
Cassi will be studying in the General Studies program with the intention of getting into the Nursing program.
