Women's Soccer falls in season opener

Lincoln, RI - The Central Maine Mustangs Women's Soccer team opened their 2019 season, the tenth anniversary of the women's program, on the road in Lincoln, RI taking on CCRI. Excited about the season and a squad with ten returning players, the Mustangs unfortunately got off to a slow start and struggled to control the middle of the field against a good CCRI squad and fell behind 1-0 about 10-minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Giulia Marsella.

The game began to even out after that but the Mustangs still struggled defensively against a continuous CCRI attack. 30-minutes into the game, Caysie Gautreau got behind the Mustangs defenders to give CCRI a 2-0 lead that held until halftime.

Central Maine was able to increase their pace of play which created a more evenly played game but early in the second half, a well-placed long shot by Mackenna Leahy off a pass from Jezz Nunes put the Mustangs behind 3-0.

A defensive lapse at the 60-minute mark led to a Jezz Nunes goal off a pass by Brianna Jarrett giving CCRI a 4-0 lead. With 5-minutes left in the game, the Mustangs would give up one more, a goal by Caysie Gautreau, her second of the game, to put CCRI comfortably ahead at 5-0.

Skyler Henry (Waterford, CT) made 14 saves for Central Maine in a valiant effort.
