Women's Soccer loses on road to NHTI

Concord, NH - The Lady Mustangs traveled to Concord, NH for their first major test of the season and came away with an 8-2 loss in a conference matchup with defending YSCC Champions New Hampshire Technical Institute. This was a game that provided a good blueprint of what the team needs to re-work to compete with the top teams in the conference. A seven-minute defensive breakdown resulted in a four-goal flurry by the Lynx that opened up the game beyond reach in the second half.

NHTI opened the scoring at the 8-minute mark on an unassisted Emily Krouse goal. An "own-goal" by the Central Maine defense ten minutes later that was caused by a deflected ball off a defenders leg put NHTI up by 2-0, but the next twenty-five minutes would see the ball move up and down the field with opportunities by both teams and the Lynx carrying a 2-0 lead into half-time.

Four minutes into the second half, Cassi Smeltzer (Waldoboro, ME) closed the gap on a long shot from outside the penalty area that the NHTI keeper couldn't quite secure and the Mustangs now found themselves down only 2-1. Within five minutes, NHTI was able to get that one back on a goal by Hosana Nishermeiwe, assisted by Emily Knouse to put the Lynx up 3-1. That goal began a seven minute defensive breakdown by the Mustangs that led to two more Nishermeiwe goals plus a goal and an assist by 2018 YSCC Player of the Year, Maura Hart. The Mustangs were able to get one back when Taylor Henry (Rumford, ME) scored her first collegiate goal by banging in a rebound but by the time the Mustangs could pull themselves together they were down 6-2. An injury to Central Maine goalkeeper Skyler Henry had Ali Sult come in to relieve her for the final 30 minutes and NHTI goals by Kaylyn Storozuk and Emily Knouse had the final score at an 8-2 NHTI win.

NHTI outshot the Mustangs by 33 to 10. Central Maine (3-2 overall, 2-1 YSCC) hosts their rival Southern Maine Community College in a conference game on Tuesday, September 24 at 6pm on the Mustang Turf Complex.
