South Portland, ME - The Central Maine Mustangs, coming off their shocking win in the semi-finals against an unbeaten NHTI team were thrilled to be playing in the Yankee Conference Championship game against their in-state rival Southern Maine Community College. It was everything a championship game should be and in the end, the Mustangs fell just a bit short.
It was an evenly played game up and down the field with excellent chances at the net by both teams. The Southern Maine Seawolves had better possession than Central Maine at midfield throughout the game but the play at both ends of the field was similar by both teams.
Southern Maine got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute on a header by Alyson Lemnah off a corner kick by Desiree Veilleux. That would prove to be the only goal of the game.
Central Maine came close to sending the game into overtime several times near the end of the second half but ended up putting the ball into the hands of the Seawolves goalkeeper, Calley Baker, who received MVP of the Tournament.
Mustang goalkeeper Ali Sult (Lisbon, ME) made 5 saves on 6 shots on goal in the 1-0 loss. Both teams finished the game with 15 shots each with the Mustangs having the advantage on shots on goal 13 to 5.
Following the game, in addition to Baker receiving MVP, Southern Maine's Alyson Lemnah would be awarded Offensive Player of the Tournament and Central Maine Mustangs freshman defender Jade Sturtevant (Litchfield, ME) received Defensive Player of the Tournament for her performance in both the semi-final and the championship game.
