Starting Off Strong

South Portland, ME - The CM Women's Volleyball team started off their season with a bang on Saturday with a double header against NHTI and SMCC.

CM started off the day with a sweep of NHTI (25-16, 25-9, 25-9).  The Mustangs started off a little slow, giving up several points in the opening set due to unforced errors. Once they got the first-game jitters under control they were able to get into a grove and ran away with the 2nd and 3rd sets.

The second match of the day against SMCC was tougher for the Mustangs, but still ended with in a victory in 4 sets (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10).  SMCC started off with a lot of energy, jumping out to an early 6-point lead in the first set, but the Mustangs were able to fight back and tie it up at 14-14.  After that, the Mustangs had control of match and won the first set by 5 and the second set by 8.  SMCC was able to mount a comeback and won set 3 by only 2 points, but the Mustangs were are able close the door in the 4th set, winning decisively 25-10.

The Mustangs were propelled by great serving and serve reception in both matches, which is promising looking forward.  After the game, Coach Chapman said "this was a really great showing for us.  We were able to deal with a little bit of adversity yet still manage to keep our cool and take care of our side of the net.  There is still a lot of aspects of the game that we can improve on, but this was a great way to start our season."

This coming week is going to be a busy one for the Mustangs, playing at Fort Kent on Friday and then a double header at home against Great Bay Community College and Southern Maine Community College on Saturday.
