Musese Delivers Golden Goal In 2OT Win

AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer program outlasted the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (CMCC) 3-2 in a double overtime Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) match on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

SMCC first-year Keto Tchiputo (Portland, Maine) gave the road team an early 1-0 advantage on a delivery from first-year Joel Musese (Auburn, Maine). The Mustangs used a goal by Julian Clements to get even in the 67th minute before Tchiputo put away his second of the evening, again assisted by Musese, in a seesaw affair.

The Mustangs scored another equalizer courtesy of Muktar Ali with less than a minute remaining in regulation to push the match into extra time. It was nothing doing for either time in the first period until Musese scored the golden goal at the 106:29 mark, assisted by first-year midfielder Alvaro Coto (Lyman, Maine).

First-year Joshua Nagle (Biddeford, Maine) played every minute inside the goalmouth for the SeaWolves, totaling six saves—one against a penalty kick. SMCC outshot its opponent 25-14, landing 14 on goal.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Brian Dougher reflected, "The environment was something that you look forward to as an athlete. Our guys showed grit and determination to weather the storm of momentum following a timely goal by Central Maine to push the game into extra time. Our positional depth gave us the edge in this one."

The SeaWolves extend their win streak to three and improve to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in league action. The Mustangs return to .500 at 1-1 overall, 1-1 YSCC.

The conference slate moves forward with Paul Smith's College (N.Y.) on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
