Paul Smith's women and Mustangs men take home YSCC soccer championships

CONCORD, NH (YSCC) – Two new Yankee Small College Conference champions were crowned Sunday at NHTI in Concord, New Hampshire Sunday.

On a crisp, picturesque day in New England, both the YSCC men and women took to the pitch to take home some hardware.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Bobcats of Paul Smith's College faced the Panthers of Albany College of Pharmacy.

A back and forth battle all the way, Grace Kronick scored at the 20 min mark of the first half to get the Bobcats on the board. Both teams had good chances the rest of the way, but tournament MVP Anna Thrasher turned away ten tough shots to give Paul Smith's the YSCC championship.

YSCC Women's Player of the Year Julia Roemer of the Panthers peppered Thrasher for five shots on goal, but could not put one in the back of the net. The Panthers Emily D'Abrosca got nine shots on goal in the loss but took home the Offensive Player of the Tournament. Abigail Cancilla of the Bobcats took home Defensive Player of the Tournament.

MEN'S SOCCER

One team was going home as a first-time YSCC men's soccer champion.

The teams were clearly in testing mode in the first half, as neither team had many good scoring chances. Two if the best chances for the Mustangs were stopped by the Bobcats Defensive Player of the Tournament Steven Donnelly. Donnelly made a couple of huge saves to keep the score even after the first half.

The Mustangs Mohmed Matan wasted no time, scoring a pretty goal off Donnelly less than a minute into the second half. Tournament MVP Abdibaari Hersi got what looked to be the insurance goal fifteen minutes later to give the Mustangs the 2-0 lead. Luckily, the Bobcats had a secret weapon.

YSCC Player of the Year Marvis Nosa scored twice in three seconds to even the match. The first goal was a great header off a corner kick for the Bobcats' first tally.

The second was a gorgeous goal. Nosa got the ball directly off the kick-off, made one move and then launched the ball over Mustangs goalkeeper Abdullahi Abdulahi head to even the tilt at 2.

The match got to overtime, where a controversial foul call led to a Hersi penalty kick. Hersi was making moves inside the box and was knocked to the ground from behind, leading to the whistle. Hersi approached the ball and went to Donnelly's left for the game-winner. Mustangs Suab Nur was the Offensive Player of the Tournament.
