Black Bears Sneak by Mustangs

Orono, ME. - The University of Maine Black Bears rallied from a two-goal deficit to upend visiting Central Maine Community College by a final count of 7-4 at Alfond Arena on Sunday afternoon in an inter-conference ACHA match-up. The Mustangs fell to 0-5-0 all time against their rivals from the north.

The Mustangs came out flying in the first period, with Trevor Roche scoring twice and Shawn Sullivan adding another to stretch the lead to 4-2 after one. From there, the Black Bears slowly took over a Central Maine club that has been decimated by injuries and sickness.

"I was proud of the way our guys battled and showed composure," said Mustangs head coach Matt Buotte. "It was disappointing to blow the lead the way we did, but ultimately we showed a lot of class and composure in the face of adversity. I was really proud of our guys."

The Mustangs had several chances to cut into a 6-4 University of Maine lead late in the game with a prolonged 6-on-3 advantage after they had pulled goaltender Jacob Strout, who finished with 34 saves, for an extra attacker. The visitors could not find the twine despite several point-blank opportunities and, as the first Black Bear penalty expired, the hosts were able to salt away the game into an empty net with just over two minutes remaining.

The Mustangs will head to Bridgton Academy for a non-league exhibition on Wednesday before finishing the first semester with home games this weekend. The Mustangs will host Suffolk on Saturday before concluding the home slate on Sunday when the University of New England Nor'easters storm into town for a 4:00 matinee.
