Women's Soccer torched by CCRI

Auburn, ME - On a cool, misty Saturday afternoon the Mustangs, working on a new offensive-heavy formation came out with an aggressive attack against a good CCRI Knights team and carried the play in the beginning of the game. A mistake on the outside edge of the field allowed the Knights to penetrate the Mustang defense resulting in a Giula Marsella goal on their first attack down the field in the 8th minute putting CCRI up 1-0.

Central Maine struggled to keep themselves mentally in the game after that and three more goals in an eight minute time span gave the Knights a comfortable 4-0 lead which carried them into the half.

Ali Sult (Lisbon, ME) took over the goal keeping duties for the second half as the Mustangs regrouped after the half time break to put themselves back into the game. The second half was played much more evenly up and down the field. McKenna Leahy converted a penalty kick for the Knights to put them up 5-0 in the 74th minute and a second penalty kick minutes later awarded to the Knights was stopped by Sult. With seven minutes to go in the game a long shot by Samantha Belardo (Russell, MA) went off the Rhode Island goalkeepers hands and bounced to Lauren Clough (Mount Vernon, ME) and then to Cassi Smeltzer (Waldoboro, ME) who put it in the net for her third goal of the season and finally getting the Mustangs on the scoreboard with the game ending in a 5-1 loss.

Central Maine travels down the turnpike on Tuesday, October 15th for a non-conference matchup at 3:30pm at Southern Maine Community College. The Mustangs fall to 4-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in YSCC.
