Women's Soccer Downed by Unity

CM women's soccer played their first home game today against Unity.  The Mustangs were feeling much more assured about playing Unity because the team's former goalie, Hannah Champagne, returned.  Unfortunately, even with Champagne's 24 saves-on-goal, Unity was still able to defeat the Mustangs 8-0.

During the first half of the game, Unity dominated the game and scored 6 first half goals.  Mariza Gionfriddo (#16), of Unity, plowed through the Mustang's defense and scored 4-goals throughout the game; those goals were assisted by: Morgan Schroeder (#18) and McKinley Bell (#5).  There were 33-shots on goal by Unity during the first half the game; Champagne had 14-saves.

The Mustangs changed their formation from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 for the second half of the game which helped stop Unity from dominating the Mustangs Defense.  Unity was able to score 2-goals during the second half, however, the Mustangs looked at that as a huge improvement from the first half of the game.

Mustang's offensive players Cassie Regner, Rebecca Wolinski, and Amber Pritchard had some great attacks on Unity's defense, but unfortunately for the Mustangs, no goals were scored.  Mustang's defensive players Bri Lajoie, Breanna Cox, Stephanie Mullins, and Courtney Cotnoir fought hard, but were overmatched.

The Mustangs fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the YSCC, while Unity improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.  CM returns to action Sunday, September 16th when UMaine-Machias visits Auburn for a 2:00pm match.
