Mustangs earn first program win

Portsmouth, NH - The Mustangs opened up their season on Friday with a double header against Great Bay Community College and NHTI.

The Mustangs played their first match of the night against Great Bay, which CM was able to sweep in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-21). CM's strong serving set the tone of the match, led by Angelina Leonard who tallied up 13 aces. CM's outside hitters Tiara Begishe and Cheyenne Cly were also major contributors to the Mustang's success through their efficient hitting, (.563 and .429 respectively) and scrappy defensive play. It was a solid all-around match for the Mustangs, and was the first win for Head Coach, Kyle Chapman, and the program's history.

The second match of the night did not go as well for the Mustangs, and they fell in 4 to NHTI (11-25, 25-14, 19-25, 10-25). After coming out flat in the first set, CM battled back and won the second set. They started down early in the third set but battled back to make it competitive. NHTI then went on a serving run and CM wasn't able to recover after that.

When asked about how he felt his team played, Coach Chapman said, "I am really proud of how hard the girls played today. We showed a lot of composure and grit at some key moments, which is impressive considering how young our team is. I feel like we did a lot of things well, and found some aspects of our game that we need to improve. Although losing matches is never fun, it's a good learning experience. I am excited to get the chance to get back in the gym and get back to work so that we are better prepared the next time we step on the court against both of these teams."

The Mustangs are looking to continue to build on their success as they take on Great Bay and Paul Smith on Sunday, September 19th at SMCC in South Portland.
