Mustangs Sweep Moose In First Baseball Meeting

Auburn, ME – The Mustangs scored 21 combined runs in the doubleheader and Garren Post and Jake Calver each recorded three RBIs, as CMCC swept the University of Maine at Augusta Moose in the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Central Maine took game one, 10-0 in five innings, before holding off the Moose 11-7 in game two. It was the debut games for the UMA's brand new baseball team.

Game One, 10-0

Brandon Gour scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the first, reaching on a walk, and advancing all the way home on two wild pitches from UMA starter Tom Gust.

In the second the Mustangs loaded the bases twice with three batters being hit by pitches. Ryan Stone and Jake Calver each recorded an RBI on sacrifice flies on either side of a Gour walk that drove in a run. That made it 4-0 CMCC.

Calver picked up his second RBI with another sac-fly to left field in the fourth, which drove in Stone. But the real damage was done in the fifth inning. The Mustangs scored five times to bring game one of the doubleheader to an early end.

Gage Hubbard hit a triple into left field. Steven White came on as a courtesy runner, and came home on a Hayden Durrell single through the gap between third and short. Shane Jewett drove Durrell in with a line drive to left and after advancing to third, came home on a passed ball to make it 8-0.

With the bases loaded, Calver was hit by a pitch to bring one run in and Garren Post ended the game with a line drove to right field that scored Lee Robertson.

Logan Carpenter picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs, allowing just one hit in five innings and striking out four.

Game Two, 11-7

CMCC picked up right where it left off in game two, scoring nine runs in the first two innings.

In the first, Post delivered a ground ball up the middle to drive in Gour, then was one of three players to score later in the inning on wild pitches by David Jinks.

The junior from Westbrook, ME also reached and scored in the second. Post's pop fly was dropped which brought home Stone. With the bases loaded and Gage McGrane on in relief, Brendan Mahaney's grounder brought Post in. White scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, and a walk to Robertson brought home Durrell for a 9-0 Mustangs lead.

McGrane would score the first run in UMaine-Augusta baseball history. The freshman from Gardiner Area High School knocked a double into right field. Elias Murray's ground out to second brought him home to cut the deficit to 9-1.

Another Mahaney ground ball scored Post for the second straight inning in the third. And in the fourth, Post singled on a line drive to right field that drove in Gour. With an 11-1 lead, all CMCC needed to do was record three outs in the top of the fifth to seal the deal.

But in their turn at the plate, the Moose manufactured a two-out run to extend the game. McGrane reached on a single before Murray came on to pinch run for him. After stealing second to get into scoring position, Blake Morrison beat out a ground ball to short to bring him home and make it 11-2.

UMaine-Augusta rallied for four runs in the fourth to further narrow the lead down to 11-6, and added one more in the top half of the seventh before Central Maine closed things out.

Post finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brady Vincent picked up the win for the Mustangs on the mound, pitching five innings before Owen Scott came on in relief.

Next up, CMCC travels to Southern Maine Community College on Monday, September 16th for a nine-inning game against the Seawolves. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
