Mustangs Lock Down Chapman as Volleyball Coach

Auburn, ME – The Central Maine athletic department and athletic director Dave Gonyea is pleased to announce Kyle Chapman from Greene, Maine has been appointed women's' volleyball coach.

Chapman was born and raised in Arizona, the oldest of 4 boys.

After excelling in many sports, he started playing volleyball as a sophomore in high school.  Volleyball quickly became more than a sport, it became his passion.  By his senior year in high school, he received many accolades, culminating with an All-Tournament Team selection at the USAV Boys Junior National Championships.

After serving a two-year church mission to Chile, he was recruited to play volleyball at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  Before getting the chance to play, he suffered a back injury that sidelined him.  Although no longer playing, he still worked with the BYU men's team as a student manager for four years while he earned his degree in Exercise Science.  Getting the chance to learn from some of the greatest volleyball minds in the country helped him grow and develop as a coach.

After graduating from BYU, he and his beautiful wife, Erica (formerly Davis), moved to Arizona where he began coaching the boys' volleyball at Highland High School (his alma mater) and Victory Volleyball Club.  His club teams were some of the most successful in the club's history, and after three years of coaching the high school team, the team was ranked 19th in the country.  Kyle attributes the success to the players and the culture that the club director was able to establish.

While attending BYU, he had the opportunity to coach during the summers for Gold Medal Squared Volleyball camps.  He spent his summers traveling around the country, running volleyball camps for high schools and clubs.  Although it was work, it never felt like it.  The same passion that he felt as a player came back as he started coaching more and more.

Kyle and his family moved to Maine in May 2019, and ever since he has worked to grow volleyball in the Lewiston/Auburn area.  He has worked with the Lewiston Parks & Recreation department to develop a developmental program to help more kids get involved with the sport.

Kyle and Erica have three kids: Bradley, Payton, and Oliver. If he is not in the gym, Kyle can be found playing with them. (Kyle and Erica are developing and grooming their own team of freakishly large volleyball playing monsters bent on taking over the New England.)

According to athletic director Dave Gonyea, Kyle is the perfect match for what our program needs now.  He is a breath of fresh air with the goal of resurrecting a program that for years lacked leadership and focus.  His passion excites me and commitment to the sport is unwavering.  I see a change in culture in women's volleyball at CM!"

In his day life, Chapman teaches middle school in the Lewiston school system.
