Mustangs Fall in OT at Paul Smith

Paul Smith, NY - In Day 2 of their three-day road trip, the Mustangs Women's Soccer team headed to Paul Smiths College for a Yankee Conference matchup against a young, explosive Bobcat team who has been outscoring opponents by wide margins this season.   With the offensive potential that the Mustangs carry, a game that should have been a high scoring contest at both ends of the field turned into a defensive and goalkeeper battle that kept a large crowd fully engaged for 90 minutes.   Paul Smiths came out on the attack first and had some early opportunities before the Mustangs made some adjustments to begin working the ball out of the back.   Both teams played a high-speed game on a slow grass field and the goalkeepers from both teams came up big at times.   Paul Smiths had the advantage in shots to end a first half at 0-0.

The second half was a repeat of the first with both teams matching fitness levels and trading shots.  A highlight in the second half came when Central Maine fouled a Bobcat player in the box resulting in a penalty kick for Paul Smiths.  The kick was headed for the low left corner of the net until a diving save by Mustang keeper Emma Johnson (Monmouth, ME) kept the score leveled at 0-0.   Both teams would continue to attack but came up empty to end the regulation time at 0-0.  Shots were even in the second half.

In overtime both teams came out hard on a mission a mission to end it early but it went almost the full length of the first overtime when a cross from the right side found an open Bobcat player who snuck a hard shot through a crowded box into the lower left corner of the net to give Paul Smiths the 1-0 win with 18 seconds left on the clock.

The Mustangs are back in action for another Yankee Conference game at Vermont Tech at 1pm on Sunday September 26.
