Women's Soccer blanked in home playoff loss

Auburn, ME - The Lady Mustangs 2021 season came to an screaching hault last night with a 1-0 home playoff loss to their in-state rival, Southern Maine Community College. The Seawolves bested CM in an almost identical replay of their YSCC Championship match from two years ago.

Both teams came ready to play and it did not take long to figure out that this would be a low scoring fight to the finish. Southern Maine connected on their passes at midfield better than the Mustangs in the first half but Central Maine was quick to bring the ball up the outside and attack from the corners.   It was a fast-paced game by two teams who know each other well and were not ready to have their season end.

In the 29th minute, Mackenzie Farnham penetrated the Mustang defense from the right side to put the Seawolves up 1-0 which would turn out to be the only score of the game. Both teams ended the half with 4 shots each.

The Mustangs came out in the second half with the energy and confidence they have shown all year in their ability to wear teams down and come from behind late in the game. The Seawolves played a compact defense to prevent the energized Mustang attack from leveling the score. In the end, Central Maine would outshoot Southern Maine in the second half by 8 to 2 but would come up empty and end their season with a 1-0 loss. Southern Maine moves on to the YSCC Final Four next weekend and will take on YSCC #1 seed, Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.

Women's Soccer Head Coach, Rob Rodriguez, commented, "Certainly, the results were not what we wanted but this was a high quality, fast-paced college soccer game that neither team deserved to lose. It was exciting and entertaining for the entire 90-minutes and both teams left it all on the field and for that I was proud to be a part of it."
