South Portland, ME –Central Maine Community College fell to rival SMCC in a softball doubleheader Tuesday night in South Portland. The Seawolves blanked the Mustangs for 9-0 and 6-0 victories to take the two games, and the fall series between the squads.
Game One, 0-9
Both teams struggled to manufacture runs in the early going, with things staying scoreless headed to the bottom of the third. Cameron Crerar hit an RBI double to right field for the Seawolves before Delanie Perry's line drive double to left plated her and Olivia Hill. That made it 3-0 SMCC and got their offense into rhythm.
Pitcher Sarah Wilkins helped her own cause with a solo home run to right in the bottom of the fourth. Courtney Frohaug got herself into scoring position with a two-out steal, then was brought home by Hill's fly ball into right for a 5-0 lead.
The bottom of the fifth is when SMCC did its real damage, scoring four runs to end the game early. Wilkins ground out plated a run. Lola Donahue's RBI single between first and second brought in another. And with one out, Hill came through with her third hit of the evening to score Donahue and Frohaug for the 9-0 winning score line.
Olivia Gallan came through with two of the Mustangs six hits in the losing effort. Madison Boynton was tagged with the loss allowing five runs on 11 hits in four innings pitched before Brooke Gero came on in relief. Wilkins picked up the win for the Seawolves with six strikeouts in the shutout.
Game Two, 0-6
Sloan Scotvold got the ball to start game two for SMCC and took the baton from Wilkins in stride. The freshman pitcher from Red Deer, Alberta tossed a complete game shutout, only striking out three, but allowing just four hits in the process.
It took until the fourth inning for Gallan to get CMCC's first base hit. Keira Greene followed that up by reaching first on a bunt, but with two runners on the Seawolves recorded the next three outs to end the threat.
Jayden Tripp had the winning run with an RBI triple in the second inning. The Seawolves added two more in the third and scored three times in the fifth to seal the victory. Tripp finished with three RBIs total on two hits. Scotvold and Frohaug also went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.
SMCC improves to a perfect 6-0 to start the season, with Central Maine the only team to score more than one run against them, back in their doubleheader in Auburn.
The Mustangs still have seven more games to go in their fall ball season, as they look to tune up for the spring.
