CM trounces Herons in Three Straight Sets

Auburn, ME - CMCC Mustangs were back at it again, this time against the Great Bay CC Herons. The Mustangs took care of business in and won in three straights sets in front of a packed crowd (25-8, 25-6, 25-0).

The Mustangs started out the night with a bang, playing a hype video on the jumbotron and a light show as the starters were announced in front of a packed gym. The whole experience set the tone of the match before the first serve even happened. The energy of the spectators was infectious, and the Mustangs fed off it throughout the match.

Coach Yami Nolan, CM's assistant coach, said after the match, "The team introduction was a cool experience that we all are going to remember for a long time."

The Mustangs started off a little slow, but quickly picked up the intensity. Remembering the sub-par match they had against ACPHS last Saturday, the Mustangs had a goal to be more present and disciplined until the very last whistle was blown. This discipline was evident throughout the match as they went on to play very clean, error-free volleyball. As a team they hit .450, the highest hitting percentage that they have had all season.  Sage Cormier, Tiara Begishe, and Gia Cooper each had 5 kills with zero errors on the night.

The highlight of the night came in the third set. Angelina Leonard was the first server of the set and went on to serve 25 straight points leading the Mustangs to a 25-0 victory in set three. That is a feat that rarely happens in the game of volleyball, at any level.  She set several school records including most aces in a single set (15), most aces in a match (21), and most serving attempts in a single match (42).

When asked about Leonard's performance after the match Coach Chapman said, "I am really proud of her performance tonight. What she was able to do tonight is something really special, something that in all my years as a player and a coach I have never seen happen. I hope that those watching at home or in the stands realize just how impressive that was."

The Mustangs have a busy weekend, taking on ACPHS at home on Saturday, and Paul Smith's College on Sunday.
