CMCC Celebrates Men’s Soccer National Championship

Auburn, ME – Central Maine Community College held a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon honoring the 2024 CMCC Men's Soccer team for their USCAA Division II National Title. President Betsy Libby and Athletic Director Dave Gonyea made remarks in Kirk Hall recognizing the team for their accomplishments before team captain Alfie Bashford gave a speech thanking the community for their support of the team over the season.

The team entered the gymnasium through a smokescreen and a shower of confetti while Queen's "We Are the Champions" played in the background. Each of the 20 players that made up the championship roster were individually recognized and the team took in a video montage recapping highlights from their campaign.

The Mustangs captured the first national championship in program history and set the record for wins in a single season after a campaign that saw them go 17-1-2 overall and capture both the Yankee Small College Conference regular season and YSCC Tournament titles. Central Maine was a perfect 9-0 in conference play and ended the year unbeaten in their final 13 games. That included seven straight shutouts to end the regular season, victories over SMCC and Paul Smith's College in the YSCC Tournament, and three victories at the USCAA National Tournament in Pittsburgh without allowing a goal.

Head coach Dalton Wing and assistant Isidoro Domingues oversaw a team that had three players receive All-American honors, placed five on the YSCC All-Conference list, and had six selected to the USCAA All-Tournament team.

Junior forward Ivan Domingues (Lewiston, ME) and sophomore midfielder Jeremiah Gomez (Old Orchard Beach, ME) shared the National Co-Player of the Year award. Domingues led the way offensively for the team with 26 goals and 9 assists to finish tied for the national lead in points. He was also the YSCC Player of the Year. Gomez led the nation in assists with 19 and scored 10 goals himself while being chosen National Tournament MVP.

Captain and center back Bashford patrolled a back line that had 12 shutouts. Goalkeeper Cody Cleaveland led the country in wins, save percentage, and fewest goals against. Igor Domingues, Mitch Cameron, and Mikel Soto all finished with at least 6 goals while David Nzuzi and Matty Waters each had 6 assists.

The men's soccer USCAA championship is the fifth national title in school history with coach Gonyea's men's basketball team having captured the title back in 2002 and Andrew Morong leading women's basketball to three national championships in 2017, 2019, and 2022.
