Mustang Semester Recap - Basketball

This winter our Men's and Women's Basketball teams took to the court after not playing a game since the 2019-2020 season. Our women have shown why they are nationally ranked and consistently in the discussion for the national championship. Currently they have a record of 10-2 with scoring over a hundred points in three of those games. With the addition of two former players as assistant coaches, this young Mustang team brings a lot of promise heading into the winter break. Head Coach Andrew Morong says, "As a coaching staff, having 15 newcomers is incredibly nerve-racking, but we are excited about the challenge and optimistic about the possible outcomes." The Mustangs are led by lone returner, Eliza Brault and Emily Strachan who is leading the team in points per game with 17.2. The team will look to the leadership of the coaching staff and each other to push them to the next level. The Mustangs return to the court January 8th when they travel for the North Country Invitational.

In typical fashion on the men's side, they have added three players from Australia for this season. The relationship that CM basketball has with players from Australia is second to none as former players are putting in good words for future players. "In all the years I have coached, I had never had a present player at the division one level advocating for another player. It reinforces my mindset on how tight and connected the Aussies are and how they look after each other," explains Head Coach Dave Gonyea. In the first half of the season, the Mustangs are 7-6, but have fought hard and hung around even in their losses. They are led by recent Yankee Small College Conference player of the week, Josh Chery, who is averaging 20.5 points per game. With a young team, they will look to their veteran leadership to guide them through the second of the half of the season. The men's basketball team return to action when they hit the road for Vermont Tech on the 16th.
