Spugnardi Bags Five, Mustangs Manhandle Monks 8-1

Auburn, ME – Captain Kylee Spugnardi put five goals in the back of the net and a trio of defenseman also scored as the CMCC women's hockey team coasted past the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks 8-1 on Sunday night at Norway Savings Bank Arena. It was the third straight hat trick for the center from Turner, ME.

The Mustangs remain undefeated in their inaugural season, now sitting at 6-0 and 4-0 on home ice heading into the Thanksgiving break. The women's squad has outscored opponents by at least six goals in half of their victories.

"I'm very proud of this group," said head coach Jordy Knoren. "From training camp, we weren't sure what we had with this group. Everybody was a little bit nervous, we didn't know what to expect. I just think to get to Thanksgiving being undefeated, and some of the games… two overtimes, comeback wins, there's been some adversity this group faced and they've gotten through it."

Spugnardi scored just 52 seconds into the contest to set the tone for the game. The Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland Red Hornets product then tallied at 4:01 and 7:14 to complete a natural hat trick and make it 3-0 midway through the period.

Defenseman Lauren Hanlon buried her fourth of the year with 5:37 left before the intermission. The St. Dominic Academy graduate broke through down the middle before picking the top corner with a shot from the left circle. That made it 4-0 heading into the second period.

Fiona Landry and Kylie Boardman got in on the scoring act in the middle frame. Landry's shot from the left circle snuck through a screen set by McKenna Ridlon, banking in off goaltender Jenna Shutt's right pad. The goal just 50 seconds into the period was the former Lewiston Blue Devil's eighth tally of the season, putting her third on the team scoring charts. Boardman then made it 6-0 a little more than a minute later, rifling home a slap shot from the slot.

Spugnardi potted her fourth of the night on a turnaround shot with ten minutes left in the period to make it 7-0. However, St. Joe's would score a goal of their own before the intermission. Katherine Hawkes pounced on an errant pass at the top of the slot, setting up Addison French at the side of the net. Goaltender Tatum Hunt made the save to preserve her shutout, but the rebound was played back to an open Hawkes at the top of the crease for the forward to bang in on the backhand.

The third period cruised by with a running clock but Spugnardi still had time to find one more goal. Hanlon received an offense zone face-off win and motored to the bottom of the left circle before sliding the puck across the crease for her captain to tap in, making it 8-1. The Monks did have seven shots in the period, but Hunt turned all of them aside to preserve the seven-goal margin of victory.

Central Maine next hosts an exhibition contest against Hebron Academy on Wednesday, December 4th. The Mustangs and Lumberjacks were supposed to meet on November 19th before the game was pushed back. Face-off is slated for 6:30 pm.
