Andover, NH – The CMCC Women's Hockey team saw its offense come to life on the road Saturday against Colby-Sawyer College. The Mustangs put 13 goals on the board while shutting out the Chargers to pick up their first win of the second semester and snap a four-game losing streak. Loreesa Theriault Guay scored twice, tallying her first collegiate goals in the victory at Teddy Maloney '88 Hockey Rink in New Hampshire.
Central Maine jumped out to a big lead, scoring early and often in the first period. Lauren Hanlon tallied what would prove to be the game-winning goal just 1:30 into the frame. Emma Knowles and Gloria San Pedro then scored less than 30 seconds apart before five minutes had been played to make it 3-0.
Captain Kylee Spugnardi set up Theriault Guay for two straight strikes on either side of the ten-minute mark for a 5-0 advantage. Defenseman Kylie Boardman registered her fourth goal of the season with 11:54 gone in the first. Newcomer to the team Alexandra Hammerton popped in her first goal in a Mustangs jersey on an assist by Theriault Guay to cap the scoring in the first. The former back-to-back state champion with Saint Dominic Academy found the net with 44 seconds left on the clock for a 7-0 lead.
The offense slowed its scoring pace in the final two frames with the outcome no longer in doubt. In the second, San Pedro, Knowles, and Hanlon each tallied their second goals of the contest, with Knowles' strike coming on the visitor's lone power play of the night.
The third period featured a statistical anomaly with three different players scoring their second career goals. Taylor Melvin got in on the scoring act just 26 seconds into the third period to make it 11-0 Mustangs. Hammerton then put home her second of the game midway through, with Jenna Buda tallying her second of the campaign on an assist from Fiona Landry with 2:08 left on the clock.
CMCC outshot Colby-Sawyer 61-16 in the game. Goaltender Tatum Hunt turned away every shot she faced to pick up her second shutout of the year, making a game-high seven stops in the third. The 13 goals scored is the team's second-highest output, still ten behind their 23-0 victory against Wheaton College back in November. The Mustangs improve to 7-4-0 in their inaugural season and have one game remaining on their schedule after Sunday's contest at Dartmouth College was cancelled due to the snowstorm.
Central Maine travels to Waterville on Thursday, February 20th to face fellow first-year women's club hockey team, Colby College. Puck drop between the Mustangs and Mules is slated for 8:30 pm at the Jack Kelley Ice Rink.
