Mustangs Pounce on Gordon College 6-1

Beverly, Ma. – The Central Maine Community College ice hockey team used a relentless, balanced attack as the Mustangs rolled on the road against Gordon College by a final count of 6-1 on Saturday evening. The Mustangs were making their second trip to Raymond J. Bourque Arena in the last three weeks, with Central Maine having previously won the previous contest in similarly lopsided fashion.

After the 8-0 Mustangs victory at the end of October, the Fighting Scots looked to respond early. They would jump out to a 1-0 lead at the halfway point of the first period, when defenseman Luke Tremblay buried a 5-on-3 power play goal to give Gordon an early advantage.

The Mustangs would tie the game just 1:59 later when Sean Coleman burst down the left wing and slid a pass across to a darting Jordy Knoren, who buried a one-timer past goaltender Pat Tevenan. The score would remain level after 1, with Gordon outshooting Central Maine 14-12.

The Mustangs would take their first lead 7:!7 into the second, when Sean Coleman would cut across the slot and unleash a wrist shot past Tevenan to push the visitors in front. Then, with Evan Paquette ejected for a dangerous high-sticking play, the Mustangs would begin to put the game out of reach with a power play tally at the 11:05 mark of the middle frame. Drake Goupil would finish off a goalmouth scramble, with Trevor Roche and Isaiah Dubois adding assists on the play.

With the game 3-1 heading into the final period, the Mustangs attack would prove too much for Tevanen and the rest of the Fighting Scots to handle. At the 5:18 mark of the third, Trevor Roche would finish off a Parker Springer feed to give the Mustangs a 4-1 lead. Continuing to press until the final horn, the Mustangs would add a fifth goal with 1:19 remaining when Alec Howes made a nifty move to beat a defender before uncorking a perfect wrist shot that would evade Tevanen and extend the Mustang advantage to four.

Central Maine would round out the scoring with 40 seconds to play, this time with Dana Taylor-Fifield finishing off a Zac Brown opportunity. Taylor-Fifield collected the rebound before calmly slipping the puck past Tevanen to cap off a successful week for the Mustangs, who were coming off a 5-2 home victory over Thomas College three days prior.

The win pushes the Mustangs to 6-5-0 on the year, including 3-3-0 on the road. Central Maine outshot Gordon 38-18. The Mustangs are next on the ice Saturday, November 18th when they host Wentworth School of Technology at Norway Savings Bank Arena. The puck will drop at 4:00 p.m.
