Auburn, ME - During the 2021-2022 season, Wyatt Hathaway played for NCAA DIII school, Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Appearing in just ten games for the Monks, Hathaway made the decision to find a new home to showcase his talents. That new home being Central Maine where he was welcomed with open arms. "I chose CM because the first time I was on campus I felt like I had known the guys forever and felt like family instantly by the way coach, the guys on the team, and other faculty treated me," said Hathaway.
When he finally arrived at CM for the school year, he was immediately ready to step into a leadership position. Before the season began, he was named one of the team captains due to his ability to lead his teammates on and off the court. When not in class, you can find Wyatt in the gym getting in extra shots or in the weight room working on his fitness. His work ethic is second to none and that coincides with the high expectations that he sets for himself. Hathaway added, "My biggest challenge so far has been trying to keep up with the expectations I have for myself on and off the court. I want to be very successful on both so managing the time between is hard." Head Coach Dave Gonyea states, " finding the right college is all about fit. Wyatt found his fit and CM and he has not looked back, leading the Mustangs to a 9-3 first half record. He is a legit "gamer" and a kid who isn't afraid to take and hit big shots. We are thrilled he is wearing the red and black."
Heading into the winter break, the Mustangs are 9-3 with a conference record of 5-1. While the Mustangs are sitting on top of the Yankee Conference, Hathaway is leading the team in points per game with an average of 15.9. His biggest game came against conference rival NHTI where he scored 33 points with six three pointers. There is no question that Hathaway is a competitor. When you are watching him play, you can see the focus, the drive and willingness to do whatever it takes to win. From hitting the big shot, setting up a teammate for an easy basket or diving on the floor for a loose ball, he leads by example and isn't afraid to be vocal. Just listen for him when he hits a big shot or a three-pointer. Ric Flair would be proud of the level of "wooo" that comes from Wyatt and now the fans that have caught on to his signature celebration.
Although the Mustangs are only 12 games into their season, it seems to look like Hathaway has found his way back to the top. The Leavitt Area High School all-time leading scorer is already making his mark at CM. If there is one thing for certain is that Wyatt knows how to score. He is shooting 40% from the 3-point line and consistently beats defenders off the dribble to get to the rim. When defenders give him space, he has a beautiful mid-range game.
