Softball sweeps Great Bay CC in double-header

GAME 1

Portsmouth, NH - The Mustangs softball team edged the Herons of Great Bay Community College in game one of their twin bill Saturday by a 3-2 margin.

Sophomore Olivia York (Bethel, ME) took the circle for the Mustangs going the distance. The right-hander struck out five and walked six. Though the game was paced by the defence of second baseman Samantha Belardo who made multiple plays including two key double plays, stopping the Herons from any attempt to move around the bases.

The Mustangs jumped on the Herons early when Freshman Alex Bessey got on first, stole second (3 total) and was knocked in by Ali Sult. The Mustangs scored two in the fourth making it 3-0. The Herons tried to rally in the seventh scoring two runs but was shut down when Hayley Peterson caught a line drive hit to center and threw to Belardo for a game ending double play.

York earned her first win of the season pitching a complete game; Makayla Herget suffered the loss for the Herons.  The win marked the first for the Mustangs since 2016.

 

GAME 2

Freshman Alex Bessey (Jay, Maine) earned the start in game two for the Mustangs going three innings before Olivia York came back in the game to seal the 13-9 win for the Mustangs. The Mustangs were hot from the start when Freshman Ali Sult (Lisbon, ME) clobbered a two-run double over the left fielder to give the Mustangs 2-0 advantage in the first.

Sult who again doubled in the second and tripled in the fifth ended the game with six RBI's for the Mustangs. Freshman Cagney O'Brien alson nailed a triple and a single as well.

York who entered the game in the fourth inning to shut down the Herons. York allowed only three hits while striking out six earning her second win of the year. Great Bay's Harlee-Ann Palmerwas was victim to the loss.

Mustangs move to 2-2 on the season.
