Bates Buzzer Tap Holds Down Knights

Randolph, VT- In a back and forth affair for 45 minutes, the Mustangs stunned the Knights of Vermont University 92-90 in overtime Saturday.

A Jackson Birmingham 10-footer went off the rim and big Harry Bates tapped the rebound in at the buzzer at the end of regulation to tie the game 79-79.

The Mustangs were coming off an important win on Friday night, traveled to Randolph the next day for the 5pm tipoff.  A competitive first half with both teams exchanging the lead led to a 37-35 Vermont lead at halftime.  CM caught a second wind at halftime utilizing nine players to keep the starters rested to take control of the game.  Up by ten points in the middle of the second half wasn't enough for the visitors.  The Knights came storming back with sharpshooter Tyler Allen hitting three consecutive shots to get Vermont back in the game.

With time ticking down, the Mustangs maintained ball control and did a good job with their shot selection.  An important Boston Caldwell three put the visitors up by three with a minute remaining.  However, Jaylon Calvin wasn't to be denied.  He got to the rack and put the home team up by two points with 22 second remaining.  A CM time out led to a designed play and allowed Birmingham a nice look but the shot slid right with Bates leaping and putting in the rebound.

Overtime was basically the same pace, energy as the first forty minutes.  CM went up by two with Vermont controlling the last shot.  A Calvin jump shot fell short allowing the Mustangs to escape with the victory.

CM placed three players in double figures: Boston Caldwell (9-15) led the squad with 22 points, Jeremiah Simeon (9-13) added 20 points and Harry Bates (9-13) hit for 19 points.  On the rebounding side, Bates registered 12 rebounds and Simeon hauled down 11 rebounds.  Both recorded a double double.

Jackson Birmingham recorded a stellar game with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.
