Mustangs End Weekend With 7-4 Win at UNH

Durham, NH – CMCC Men's Hockey wrapped up a weekend road trip to New Hampshire with a 7-4 victory over UNH on Sunday afternoon. Mikita Kalmykov was outstanding for the Mustangs tallying two goals and adding three assists while alternate captain Evan Knowlton dealt out five helpers in the win.

Central Maine bounced back from its frustrating 2-3 defeat at Dartmouth the night before by scoring three times in the first period. Kalmykov started things off 8:46 in with a power play tally, before assisting on Aaron Higgins' goal four minutes later. Diego Alonso rounded out the scoring with four minutes left in the frame. The power play marker was the CMCC captain's fourth goal of the season.

Knowlton and Kalmykov both had an assist on Michael Belleau's finish 3:33 into the second and Higgins made it 5-0 Mustangs in the final minute of the period with the team's third power play goal of the night.

UNH replaced starting goaltender Cam Collins with back-up Aidan Donnelly to start the third period and did gain some momentum. The Wildcats spoiled Gage Ducharme's shutout bid with 7:38 gone on a Tony Tozier tally. Rob McCarthy then scored a power play goal of his own to make it 5-2 with eight minutes left.

Belleau popped in his second of the day to briefly restore order but UNH continued its third period comeback with goals from Billy Johns and Derek Santullo in the final five minutes to put some nerves onto the CMCC bench. However, a tripping penalty on the Wildcats in the last sixty seconds made things much simpler for the Mustangs, and Kalmykov bookended the game with his second power play strike to end it 7-4.  The Dinamo Minsk U18 product's performance nearly doubled his points for the season.

"We played 40 minutes of solid hockey with everybody involved," said head coach Jordy Knoren. "Then in the third period we fell asleep. That's something we can't let happen moving forward, and we'll address it in practice."

Central Maine outshot UNH 46-31 for the game and was deadly with the extra man going 4-for-5 on the power play. Ducharme finished with 27 saves to claim his second win of the season in his second start.

CMCC continues its time away from home ice with a trip to Pennsylvania for the ACHA showcase tournament at Revolution Ice Center in Pittston, PA. The Mustangs take on St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, November 1st at 9:15 pm, before facing Saint Vincent College and Sacred Heart University that Saturday and Sunday.
