Sacred Heart Beats Men’s Hockey On Last Day of PA Trip

Pittston, PA – Men's Hockey closed out its three-games-in-three-days ACHA showcase in Pennsylvania with a 5-3 loss at the hands of Sacred Heart University on Sunday morning. Heath McLean, Evan Knowlton, and Emmit Sullivan had the goals for the Mustangs who finish their stay at the Revolution Ice Centre with a 2-1 record.

"Overall, it was a pretty efficient weekend," said head coach Jordy Knoren. "Obviously the wins on Friday and Saturday were great, and I liked how we battled back today to tie the game. I think we played really solid hockey and just continuing to work on our all-around game."

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead with a goal in the first and second period. Jack Reid tallied a power play strike with 4:34 left in the opening stanza, and Ryan Davis doubled the lead when he scored 4:30 into the second frame.

A tired Mustangs group, playing their third game in 36 hours, rallied to tie the game with two goals just 60 seconds apart.

Evan Knowlton pounced on an errant pass by the left circle before snapping a shot over the glove of goaltender Connor Smith. The sixth of the season for the Lewiston Blue Devils product came 13:02 into the second.

Defenseman Heath McLean then evened things up at 2-2 with his third of the season. Emmit Sullivan's shot from the high slot was redirected by Diego Alonso at the top of the crease. The goaltender made the save, but the rebound came straight off his right pad for the crashing McLean to shovel home.

Sacred Heart would take the lead back with a pair of power play goals midway through the third period. Charles Tyrell scored at 10:35 and Brandon Cardelli had a goal two minutes later to make it 4-2.

Sullivan gave the Mustangs a fighting chance when he scored his second of the season to make it 4-3 with 3:05 left. Will Galligan lugged the puck down the right wing from his own zone before shooting from the right circle. The transfer from the University of Southern Maine drove to the net and dug out the rebound before Smith could cover it, sliding it out in front for Sullivan to bury in the open net.

The joy was short-lived however, as Aaron Shulman scored less than a minute later to seal restore the two-goal cushion and seal the 5-3 win for SHU. Goaltender Sebastian Couturier finished the morning with 31 saves for CMCC.

The Mustangs now return to Auburn, ME for a three-game homestand at Norway Savings Bank Arena. Central Maine hosts twin cities rival Bates College on Friday, November 8th before playing UNE on Sunday and rounding things out by hosting UMass Amherst on Friday, November 15th. The Mustangs and Bobcats face-off this Friday at 8:15 pm.
