Men’s Hockey Quells Nor’easters 11-1

Auburn, MEAaron Higgins scored four seconds into the game and Emmit Sullivan and Dylan Blue each had two-goal nights, as the CMCC men's hockey team rolled to an 11-1 win over the University of New England. The Mustangs completed the season sweep of UNE outscoring the Nor'easters 20-2 over their two meetings.

"I thought the team responded in a positive way after Friday night's lackadaisical effort," said head coach Jordy Knoren. "Higgins set the tone the right way and as a team we executed the little things to our standard. We limited turnovers, broke out quickly, and capitalized on our scoring chances."

The fastest goal in CMCC hockey history came before most of the fans had finished settling into their seats. Colby Pawson nudged the opening face-off over to Higgins on the left side of the circle and the Falmouth, ME native did the rest, taking four quick strides diagonally into the offensive zone before rocketing a wrist shot up over the glove of goaltender Ryan Nelson. It was the 17th goal of the season for the transfer from Liberty University.

Sullivan had two tallies by the midpoint of the period, Central Maine built a 6-0 lead with a blitzkrieg of the UNE net. Evan Knowlton and Mikita Kalmykov added goals and UNE transfer Zach Jones put a wrist shot bar down and in against his former team. Sean MacDonald pulled one back for the visitors on a rebound but Cody Ivey scored in the final minute to make it 7-1 for the hosts heading into the first intermission.

While it looked for a moment like the men might keep pace with the 23-goal output from the women's hockey team earlier in the weekend, the scoring cooled off after Heath McLean buried a power play tally 2:51 into the second period.

Dylan Blue scored at 8:18 signaling the end of the night for Nelson in between the posts. When Blue added another to make it 10-1 less than a minute later on back-up Owen Helton it looked like UNE could be in for a long night. However, the goaltender settled in and kept the Mustangs at bay for the remainder of the period. Lukas Sargolini scored the only tally of the third at 8:04 to give Central Maine a ten-goal lead.

As expected in a blowout like this, there were plenty of penalties. CMCC had ten minors whistled against them and UNE picked up 35 penalty minutes thanks to a major and ten-minute misconduct on goal scorer MacDonald.

In total, 15 Mustangs registered at least one point as the team outshot the Nor'easters 53-27. Goaltender Isaac White picked up the win with 26 saves in his first action of the season, meaning all four CMCC goaltenders have made at least one start.

Up next, the Mustangs finish off their three-game homestand with a visit from UMass-Amherst on Friday, November 15th. Game time is scheduled for 6:40 pm.
