Men’s Hockey Comeback Comes Up Short at Dartmouth

Hanover, NH Dylan Blue scored twice in the third period, but men's hockey came up one goal short of a comeback effort on the road against Dartmouth College at Thompson Arena. The loss was the Mustangs first in NECHA play this season and snapped the team's three-game winning streak.

Central Maine outshot Dartmouth 49 to 36 but could not crack the net in the first two periods with goaltender Mark McGuire making 31 saves through the first 40 minutes.

The Big Green went ahead on a goal midway through the first period by Will Lehman, and Alex Rockmore scored in the second to make it 2-0 heading into the third. Nate Rebello then made it 3-0 just two minutes into the final frame to give Dartmouth an overwhelming advantage.

However, a penalty to Rockmore and a game misconduct for contact to the head seemed to change the momentum of the game at the 3:01 mark. The Mustangs did not score on the power play but had a game-high 18 shots in the period.

Blue scored his first of two tallies midway through the period to cut the deficit back down to two. The former Lewiston High School Blue Devil then found the back of the net off an assist by Cody Ivey and Jonathan Rioux to make it 3-2 with about five minutes to play.

That would be as close as they would get though. A couple of minor penalties to Heath McLean and Mikita Kalmykov in the final minutes hampered CMCC's chance to complete the comeback, and Dartmouth hung on for the victory.

The Mustangs fall to 5-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association's Colonial North Division. The team finishes off its weekend road trip to New Hampshire against the UNH Wildcats on Sunday.
