Mustangs Fall On Road To Mules, 3-2

Waterville, ME – The CMCC Men's Hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss to Colby College Sunday afternoon on the road at the Jack Kelley Rink. The Mules took a 3-0 lead in the second period before holding off the Mustangs comeback attempt.

Tom Moreau put Colby ahead 1-0 midway through the first period. Chip Strano took a shot from the left point that somehow found its way through traffic. Goaltender Sebastian Couturier made the save, but Moreau was left unmarked at the top of the crease to tap in the rebound.

Strano then scored one of his own in the second period. The defenseman out of the Twin City Thunder's USPHL Premier program got to the puck off an offensive zone face-off before wiring a wrist shot through traffic into the back of the net.

Alex Holmgren went end-to-end for the Mules third tally just past the midway point of the hockey game. The forward took advantage of the open ice during a four-on-four stretch, with no one picking him up as he cruised into the zone. Holmgren's shot from the right circle beat Couturier blocker side with 9:34 left in the frame.

Coach Jordy Knoren looked to wake his team up by changing goaltenders, sending back-up Gage Ducharme in between the posts. His team responded almost immediately, pulling one back less than a minute later.

Aaron Higgins charged onto a loose puck down the left wing boards for a two-on-one. The Falmouth, ME native slid a pass across for Zach Jones to finish at the top of the crease, cutting the lead to 3-1. It was Jones' third tally of the season and second in the last three games.

The Mustangs cut the deficit to one a little more than a minute after that with two Lewiston Blue Devils combining for a goal. Evan Knowlton stole the puck along the far boards before passing to a wide-open Dylan Blue. He scored through the five-hole past a surprised Cooper Steinborn in net.

That would be the end of the scoring however. The third period flew by with neither team taking a penalty, and CMCC was held to just nine shots in the final 20 minutes. Higgins had the last chance to tie it up in the final seconds but his wrap-around attempt was stopped and the Mules cleared the resulting scrum to preserve the win.

Central Maine falls to 11-5-0 on the year and 6-2-0 in NECHA play. Couturier finished with 12 saves while Ducharme made 19 stops coming on in relief.

The Mustangs next head to Curry College on Friday, November 22nd before taking a few weeks off for the Thanksgiving break. CMCC returns home on Friday, December 6th to play Coast Guard Academy.
