Mustangs back on track after blanking Bobcats

Auburn, ME - After dropping their home opener on Tuesday due to NHTI, a rested and re-energized Mustang team took the field at home against USCAA DI, Bryant & Stratton-Albany. The Bobcats were a well-coached team with a lot of energy. A re-vamped lineup using a three-back formation in the first half was just what Central Maine needed to get the train back on the tracks.

The Mustangs offense came out strong but it was not until the 18th minute that the effort began to pay off. A pass at midfield by Taylor Henry (Rumford, ME) found defensive mid teammate Skyler Henry (Waterford, CT) who launched a long shot over the Bobcats keeper and found the back of the net to open the scoring. Less than four minutes later, Samantha Belardo (Russell, MA) notched her first of the game and fourth of the season off a feed by Emily Wallingford (Minot, ME) to put Central Maine up 2-0. The Bryant & Stratton attack caused some scary moments for first half keeper Emma Johnson (Monmouth, ME) who had to smother several balls near her goal line. The last five minutes of the half saw the Mustangs turn up the heat with Belardo carrying through the Bryant & Stratton defense to score her second of the game, quickly followed by a goal from Kaylee Knight (Chesterfield, ME) putting in a rebound off a shot by Julia Noel (Sabattus, ME). The Mustangs carried a 4-0 lead into halftime.

The second half began the way the first half ended with Central Maine on the attack leading to the 5th and final goal of the game when Mckenna Redstone (Turner, ME) scored her first collegiate goal off a ball by Knight. The Mustangs were content to settle in and defend their lead and protect second half keeper Allie Annear (Auburn, ME).

Central Maine, now 2-2, is back in action on Wednesday, September 15 when they visit their in-state rival, Southern Maine Community College, in a 4pm matchup.
