Johnson, VT – The Central Maine Community College women's soccer team picked up their first result of the season with a 2-2 draw on the road against Vermont State University-Johnson. Freshman Destiny Mooers scored her first collegiate goals for the Mustangs in the process.
On a damp and windy afternoon, CMCC fell behind just over a minute into the match. Jenna Jones, a first-year from Alberta, put the Badgers in front with an early strike that took only 1:03 off the game clock. That proved to be the only goal from the first 45 minutes of play.
The Mustangs did not need too much time to score themselves in the second half. In the 51st minute Lily Caban knocked down a clearance attempt in the VTSU-Johnson half of the field. The sophomore from Mt. Vernon, ME sidestepped a defender and played a pass into the area for Mooers to run onto.
The Central Maine #7 had enough time to cutback onto her right foot before delivering a shot into the side netting of the far post, beyond the reach of Badgers goalkeeper Sophia Johnson, to make it 1-1.
The game opened up in the second half, with both teams looking to move the ball quickly upfield on the counterattack. In the 62nd minute, no sooner had VTSU-Johnson defense cut off an attack from CMCC then two passes later were playing Jones through on goal. The freshman forward held her nerve in the box and slotted a low shot past Ava Morgan for a 2-1 Badgers lead.
Just three minutes later Mooers responded in kind for the Mustangs. With the wind and rain picking up, the Hampden Academy product decided to try her luck with a shot from about 25 yard out. The ball dipped and bounced right in front of the goalkeeper who could not make enough contact to keep it from bouncing over the line for the game-tying goal.
Neither team could find a winner in the final 20 minutes. Simpson showcased some safe hands to claim a number of chances in the penalty area, finishing the match with nine saves.
With its first tie of the season CMCC moves its record to 0-3-1. The Mustangs have one more game against NCAA Division III opposition, taking on Husson University in Bangor this Friday, in a rematch of their season opener.
Central Maine finally returns to home action on September 18th when they host the SMCC Seawolves at 4:00 pm.
