Women’s Soccer Scores First Win of Season vs SMCC, 1-0

Auburn, MEDestiny Mooers scored her third goal of the season early in the second half and the CMCC women's soccer game shut out the Seawolves 1-0 for their first win of the 2024 campaign.

"It was a good game," said Mooers. "We learned to come out strong, we prepared well for it, and we played our best. We'll keep it going and hopefully more wins down the road to come for us."

The Mustangs created plenty of chances in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Seawolves 8-2, but goalkeeper Grayson Soldati was equal to the task making seven saves to keep things scoreless at the break. Her best work came in the 16th minute, denying Emily Dillman who was through on goal, with a diving save to her left.

The Mustangs continued to press the issue in the second half. Dillman and Katie Blouin finished the match with three shots on target, while Lily Caban had two, but it was the passing from the sophomore out of Mt. Vernon, ME that put CMCC in front.

Caban picked out Mooers on the left-wing side, sending the Hampden Academy product through on goal. She kept her nerve with Soldati closing down and was able to curl a shot towards the far post to make it 1-0 Central Maine in the 48th minute.

SMCC did have a great chance to tie the match just a few minutes later. Emma Knowles was whistled for a foul in the box attempting to punch away a cross, giving Annabelle Fournier a chance to level things from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute. But the sophomore from Saco, ME couldn't keep her shot from flying over the crossbar keeping CMCC in the lead.

The Mustangs continued to press for an equalizer and finished the match with a 17-6 advantage in shots. Soldati finished with 10 saves in net, but had to leave the game in the 88th minute with an injury. Aubrey Gilbert came in the for the final few moments, making one save in the process.

The 1-0 non-conference win gives CMCC its first victory of the season, and its first clean sheet in the process with Knowles manning the net for the entire 90 minutes for the just the second time this year.

SMCC will play host in the countable game for YSCC play on Wednesday, October 16th. Next up for the Mustangs, a trip to USCAA Division 1 opponent UMaine-Fort Kent on Friday, September 20th. Kick-off against the Bengals is slated for 3:00 pm.
