Women’s Soccer Wins Sixth Straight, Beats WOLBI

Pottersville, NY – CMCC Women's Soccer picked up its sixth straight victory and swept its weekend road trip to New York with a 1-0 victory against Word of Life Bible Institute on Saturday afternoon. First-year Milena Strickland scored the game winner for her first collegiate goal.

The Mustangs and Huskies had an even struggle in the first 45 minutes with neither team finding the back of the net. The visitors had a slight edge in chances with a six to four lead in shots.

Destiny Mooers nearly put the Mustangs ahead in the 19th minute. Emily Dillman put the striker through on goal with a pass behind the defensive back line. Mooers dribbled into the box and had time to set her sights, but the Hampden, ME native's shot was right at goalkeeper Ryleigh Gangarossa who turned it away.

Ava Morgan made her fourth start of the year in net for CMCC with Emma Knowles playing up top as a striker. The Lewiston High School product made her best save of the first half with 18 minutes left, diving to her right to stop a low shot.

Central Maine came out much more aggressive in the second half, laying siege to the WOLBI net with 14 shots while allowing only two. Mooers had another chance two minutes after the restart, but Gangarossa got two strong hands behind it to make the save. The goalkeeper was nearly caught out by a long-range effort just past the hour mark. Dillman sent a looping shot that bounced in front of the goalkeeper and spun past her, only for Gangarossa to dive back and stop it on the goal line.

The breakthrough finally came with about 15 minutes left. Knowles took a hard shot that was pushed over the crossbar for a corner kick. The Kents Hill School product then sent a set piece delivery into the box that forced the Huskies to try and clear. Strickland found the ball bouncing to her at the top of the box and curled a one-time effort into the side netting. The first of the year for the Lowell, MA native made it 1-0 in the 74th minute.

CMCC continued to press for an insurance goal with Knowles in particular having several good chances saved. When the clock hit zero, Stickland's lone tally proved to be enough to claim the win.

The Mustangs improved to 7-4-1 and continued their perfect start to YSCC play with a 5-0-0 record against conference opponents. The team still has two matches left in their five-game road trip to end the regular season, next taking on rival SMCC in South Portland on Wednesday, October 16th.
