Hockey adds another former Blue Devil

Auburn, ME – The Central Maine Community College hockey team has continued their summer overhaul, adding another local product in Lewiston graduate Junior Mathon. Mathon, a Lewiston high school graduate, brings a combination of size and skill to a revamped Mustangs line-up that enters NECHA play for the first time in the fall of 2020.

Mathon, who graduated from Lewiston in 2019, would play a part in both the 2017 and 2018 state championships while a Blue Devil. He had an impressive senior season in 2018-19, among team leaders in scoring with 11 points in 18 games. From there he went on to lace them up for the Lewiston/Auburn Nordiques NA3HL club, where he accrued 3 points in 10 games.

"I was thrown into the Nordiques and didn't have much prep time," said Mathon of his postgraduate career. "I was thrown for a loop but I had a blast. Now I am looking forward to playing for CMCC, to making new friends and starting a new chapter in my life."

Mathon, a 5'11" right-handed talent who can play both offense and defense, figures to make a big impact on both sides of the puck.

"I'm looking forward to working with Junior," said Mustangs third year head coach Matt Buotte. "I have known him for a long time but have never had the chance to work with him directly. I am excited to add him to the mix. He does a lot of things well on both sides of the puck. In truth we still haven't decided on where he best fits—he can be a great, strong power forward or an effective puck-moving defenseman—it gives us great versatility and he will make an immediate impact."

Mathon joins an increasingly long line of local products to lace up their skates for the Mustangs, joining a handful of former Lewiston teammates on the 2020-21 roster. An avid fan of downhill bikes and four-wheeling, it will come as no surprise that Mathon intends to study in the automotive program when classes resume in the fall.

"I have heard good things about the automotive program and the hockey looks fun," he said. "The school was local, and between the cost and all of the benefits CM provides it was a no-brainer to attend."
