Auburn, ME - Hot bats in game 1 followed by an extra-inning collapse in game 2 led to a double-header split with NHTI. Conference play has now wrapped up, and the Mustangs will play 8 games vs. non-conference opponents before the YSCC Fall Invitational.
Game 1
After a scoreless 1st inning, the Mustangs scored 14 runs over the next 3, to beat the Lynx via the 10-run rule in just 5 innings. Everyone in the starting lineup recorded a hit for CM, led by Eric Hoogterp who went 3-4 with a homerun, 4 RBI, and 2 runs, Dakota Chipman also went yard, finishing 2-3 with 3 RBI. Tanner Wheeler, Zachary Mann, and Damien St. Pierre also recorded multiple hits.
Christian McClellan connected with a double for the Lynx.
St. Pierre pitched 5 innings for the Mustangs, giving up 5 hits and a walk while striking out 2 and giving up 0 earned runs. Matt Chandler pitched 2 1/3 innings for the Lynx giving up 6 hits, 6 walked, and 8 earned runs while striking out 2.
Game 2
Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead, and going into extra innings tied 3-3, the Mustangs pitching could not sustain the extended game, getting rocked for 8 runs in the top of the 8th, losing 11-3.
Fielding has continued to be a thorn in the side for CM as they committed 3 more errors in game 2 (3 in game 1 as well). These errors led to 5 of the Lynx 11 runs. On the bright side, Eric Hoogterp hit another long ball, going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Zachary Mann had the only other hit for the Mustangs, going 1-2 with an RBI.
Cole Cruz, Michael Simard, and Christian McClellan each doubled for the Lynx while Sean McClure hit a solo homerun.
Tanner Wheeler got the loss on the mound for the Mustangs, but pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out 5, with 0 walks and only 3 earned runs. Andrew Coulombe got the win for NHTI, pitching 4 innings, striking out 2, and only giving up a single hit.
With the split, CM now sits at 5-11 overall, and will be back in action Sunday as they host UMaine-Presque for another double-header.
