Mustangs sweep UMPI in double-header

Auburn, ME - The Mustangs hosted UMaine-Presque Isle for a double-header on Sunday, looking to gather momentum heading into next weekend's YSCC Invitational.  CM came out with two wins, beating UMPI 8-7 in extra innings of game 1, then 11-2 in the 2nd game.

Game 1

Central Maine seized victory in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off single at the end of the game to topple UMPI. The game was tied at seven with the Mustangs batting in the bottom of the eighth when Jordi Valls singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. 

CM earned the victory despite allowing the Owls to score five runs in the second inning. Justin Mason, Matt Davis, and Angel Morales powered the big inning with RBIs.  UMPI got on the board in the second inning when Mason singled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.

Central Maine put up three runs in the sixth inning. Alex Biron and Valls each drove in runs during the inning.  However, in the top of the seventh inning, the Owls tied things up at seven when Will Stinson doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Matt Tremble took the win for Central Maine. He lasted one and one-third innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out one and walking zero.  Austin Coulston took the loss for University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls. He went one and one-third innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out one and walking one.

Noah Salmons started the game for Central Maine. He lasted six and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs while striking out six. Colby Spencer started the game for the Owls. He surrendered four runs on five hits over five innings, striking out four.

Central Maine racked up nine hits in the game. Biron and Valls each collected multiple hits for the Mustangs. Valls and Biron all had three hits to lead Central Maine.


Game 2

CM stole the lead late in the game in an 11-2 victory over UMPI on Sunday. CM trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Eric Hoogterp doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.  The Mustangs secured the victory thanks to nine runs in the fifth inning. The rally was led by doubles by Hoogterp, Damien St. Pierre, and Alex Biron, a single by Matt Tremble, a groundout by Jordy Cabrera, and an error on a ball put in play by Zach Mann.

Mann earned the victory on the mound for Central Maine. He allowed four hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out seven and walking one.  Roberto De La Pena took the loss for UMPI. He allowed eight hits and four runs over four and a third innings, striking out two.  Biron started the game for Central Maine. He allowed two hits and two runs over three innings, striking out six.

Central Maine scattered 14 hits in the game. Biron, Elijah Grizzard-Brown, Dakota Chipman, and Jordi Valls all managed multiple hits for Central Maine. Biron went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits.

Justin Mason led the Owls with two hits in four at bats.
