Softball lands GNG shortstop

Auburn, ME - Head Softball Coach, Bruce Robertson, is pleased to announce they have fielded their next recruit for the upcoming Season. Lydia Espling of Gray-New Gloucester High School has committed to attend and play softball for the Mustangs in 2020-21 season.

Espling stated, "CM is the place for me because it feels so welcoming here and is a great college at an affordable cost. What I liked most about the campus is the new sports complex that was just built, it really makes me feel good and excited as an athlete to be competing on it. I am looking forward to having a little more control of my own schedule. Being a student athlete, you must work around classes, workouts, practices and games. This will help me have more structure in my schedule while helping me get strong as an athlete. I feel I will bring a positive personality to the team, I always put in 100% and hope my energy helps to keep others up."

She added, "I am really excited to play softball in college. I think playing softball in college will be different because it will be more of a challenge compared to my past experiences have been. I feel this is what is next for me in my softball career. I am looking forward to playing with my new teammates, making new friends and building new relationships that will last a lifetime. I am excited to learn more about the game, play new positions and doing what is needed from me that is best for the team."

Gray-New Gloucester High School Coach, Amanda Harmon, commented, "Lydia is a leader not only on the field, but off. She is always ready to put the work in whether coming early to practice, staying late and or helping her teammates improve. At SS she was a spit fire and was willing to do what it took to stop the ball. Diving in the dirt to stop it from going through a gap or knowing her area and grabbing those bloopers that were just behind 3rd base or the short LF hits. She's quick and can be utilized in any base running situation. Delayed steals, pickles, and is not shy to dive back to the base when things got close. She had confidence to push herself for the team needs and it showed. She will be a great addition to the Mustangs!"

Coach Robertson stated, "Adding local talent to the team is great! It helps bring the community in when we have home games and helps to show what CM is all about on and off the field. Lydia is a great pick up for us. She has a lot to offer our program, as she is a solid defender that will help us up the middle. Lydia is great on the base paths while adding a solid bat that will add to our offence. She will definitely help our growing roster for the 20-21 season."

Lydia who is a High Honor Student at Gray-New Gloucester will be enrolled in the Human Services Program at CM.
